Spa Tips for your Tomato Plants!

Epsom+salts

What does a spa bath have in common with planting Tomatoes?

The long weekend is upon us and many of us consider it THE weekend for planting our gardens.

I want to share with you a couple of planting tips that I use on our farm that help generate that fantastic tomato flavour that everyone loves.

We all would love a Epsom Salt spa bath AFTER planting out all our tomatoes to soothe our achey muscles right?

bring the spa to the garden first!

So, grab your regular Epsom salts (un-treated and un-scented), head to the garden and show your plants some lovin’.

What Is Epsom Salt?

First of all, Epsom salt is not salt. It is NOT something you put on your food!

Epsom salt is not actually salt but a natural mineral compound of about 10 percent magnesium and about 13 percent sulfur—often referred to as magnesium-sulfate.

Epsom salt is highly soluble and easily taken in by plants when combined with water and sprayed on leaves. As a soil additive, Epsom salt becomes soluble with soil moisture and is drawn up into plants through the roots.

add a TBSP of Epsom salts to the planting hole, along with some well rotted manure when putting out our tomato plants.

I created my first video -EEK!- to show you how easy it is plant out tomatoes! (no judging!)

Another useful tip is to position your transplant at an angle in the hole to increase the amount of stem that is below ground. Your tomato plant will form more roots out of the stem. This technique ensures a strong, healthy root system to feed your growing plant.
